Does Japan have much of a beach culture? It’s only just occurred to me that it’s got a lot of coast, but you never see people spending a day at the beach in much of the media that makes it to the English speaking world.

As a person who lived and worked in Japan long term, it’s still surprising how many amazing places exist outside the well known tourist destinations. Yes maybe some smaller places won’t be as easy to communicate, but oh man with a bit of Japanese and a translator app people in smaller towns and lesser destinations can be extremely friendly and welcoming. Amazing people, beautiful places and fantastic food. No wonder millions of people love visiting Japan.

This speaks to me. I’m a blue-eyed devil gaijin, who because I married a Japanese girl, and also no longer a party animal in Tokyo/Osaka, spend all my time in a very very small rural coastal village when I’m in Japan (month at a time or so). It’s the best time I’ve ever had in Japan, and I wouldn’t want it any other way going forward.
