If someone gets a $50 card and buys something that costs $70, the store now gets a $70 sale it never would’ve gotten. The customer feels like they “only spent $20,” but the business pockets the full $70. 2. A huge amount of gift card money never gets used. This is called breakage. Sometimes it’s a few cents left over. Sometimes it’s the entire card. Either way, that unspent balance becomes free profit for the store. 3. Gift cards force you back into the store. Even if you only plan to spend the exact amount, the moment you walk in, the business wins. Accessories, snacks, upsells — the odds of you buying more go way up. 4. They solve a huge problem in gift giving. People don’t know what to buy. Gift cards remove friction… and friction kills sales. That’s why companies love them.
