Yes! I know im not alone in hearing “what do you mean you don’t know how to make tacos/do dishes/mow the lawn” when they never taught me. It’s like they thought I was being aggressively needy and babyish for not magically gaining skills and knowledge?

My mom would routinely tell me “no one can make you feel a certain way. You’re choosing to react this way” in response to something hurtful she said. The amount of emotional intelligence that was forced on me is insane

COdependency goes both ways. Children are DEPENDENT on their parents by nature. Parents should not be dependent on their children for emotional support.

Is it the same for adult children? I desperately feel like I need my parents for help since I’m disabled and they’re like nope

Yeah, they are the ones who think they will “Spoil” their children if they hold them “too much”.

My pro life mom said she was “enabling” me when I asked for help with my own baby (her grandbaby) because I was a single mom.

parents treat children like they are full adults with adult capacity from birth. so "obviously" an adult demanding anything from another adult is codependency. but they gave so much to this "adult" that the "adult" owes them.

it’s an extension of how our government treats us - us ‘needing’ things is seen as lack of independence, not a failure of action on their part

yep! my mom would always tell me it's not her job to take care of me as early into young childhood as I can remember. She was a stay at home mom too lol so what even was her job. If confronted on the medical and dental neglect she would be enraged and say well why didn't I take myself to the hospital...as a child too young to drive, have money, and even get treatment without a parent signature.

This. 100%. It was expected that I would be self-supporting in all ways when I turned 18 and graduated from high school. Financially, socially, emotionally, etc. In every way possible. When I wasn’t 100% successful at those endeavors, I was a failure who was leaching off of my mother and her husband. But let me tell you, they did not have the same expectations for my much younger half-siblings.

lol yeah! My dad has said this before, like more than once. That we are ‘addicted’ to co-dependency. He hasn’t spoken to my sister or his grandkids in 6 years and when we explain to him they need parents/grandparents too he RUNS to them being co-dependent 😭

Codependency would be when a kid goes out and tries to heal the attachment wound caused by that exact mindset by getting into relationships with people that act like their parents

I don’t think they think about it at all. It’s more like, you’re grown, figure it out for yourself
