@adeche.atelier: Have you seen one of these sculptures before and wondered what they really represent? The Bamana people of Mali (also known as Bambara or Banmana) are a Mandé people found across Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Across its many forms, the Bamana use the Chiwara to honour fertility, discipline, ancestry, and a moral relationship with the earth. In the Chiwara dance, performers move in pairs and separating the dancers is seen as dangerous and a break in the balance Chiwara represents.
