From a Warning Growl to a Welcome Purr 💛🐆 As I made my way through the long grass towards Dash this afternoon, she let out a little warning growl. For a brief moment, she wasn’t quite sure who was approaching through the vegetation. But the instant she recognised us, everything changed. Her ears relaxed, her body softened, and she greeted us with the beautiful sound of her gentle purr. This is a wonderful example of how wild animals use communication. A growl isn’t always a sign of aggression—it can simply mean, “I don’t know who you are yet. Keep your distance until I can identify you.” Once Dash recognised familiar voices, scent, and appearance, she immediately relaxed, showing the trust that has developed over time. Unlike the powerful roar of lions and leopards, cheetahs cannot roar. Instead, they communicate through a variety of softer vocalisations, including purring, chirping, meowing, hissing, and growling. A cheetah’s purr is often associated with comfort, contentment, and feeling secure, making it one of the many unique characteristics of this incredible species. Moments like these remind us that while our rescued animals may know and trust their caregivers, they are still wild animals with natural instincts. We respect those instincts every day while providing them with a safe environment where they can thrive.
