@jonjon.jpeg: Here’s a brief explanation of what makes this street unsafe, including rat runs, conflict points, and missing pedestrian refuge. And here’s a simple solution to make it better without spending much. What’s more, it’s an example how pedestrian safety and driver safety can be aligned. This boils down to "motorists break the law, so add features to make law breaking more difficult".

This is also how we approach drinking water and surface water safety. Make it safe for the most vulnerable, and it’ll be safe for everyone.

the car that stopped to be "nice" and let the car out is the problem. don't EVER stop when you have no stop sign.

American urban design is so horrifying sometimes. Stroads should be ended. Plus move the bus stop!

could also move the bus stop to just past the intersection to clear the view.

A small roundabout would solve this so quickly

My city is like no pedestrian refuge, best I can do is a no standing sign

There’s also one pedestrian refuge in my neighborhood that drivers park on. They did everything right with intrinsically safe design. Drivers still run all over it. Something has to be done about our terrible driving safety culture where saving 20 seconds of a drivers time is worth risking everyone else’s life. I have no clue how we change that.

is the pedestrian refuge the formal name of it? From non-english native speaker the etymology tells alot about how the pedestrian is treated

Know how some people would go fill potholes? What if people just built the quick pedestrian refuge and dipped out?

I think making the last 50’ or so of those center turn lanes dedicated lefts could help too!

Shouldn’t have bus stops at corners because you lose daylighting. But need pedestrian crossing at bus stops to avoid mid block crossing.

Good explainer! Totally agree we need to build our neighborhoods as places to hangout, not just pass through
