If the compound is applied correctly, you shouldn’t have to sand hardly anything.

Pro tip mud thin and perfectly the first time wait but for it to start setting then scrape then and sponge clean now your ready to texture zero sanding needed 👍

The real trick is to run damp sponge across ur patch work before its dried. Like shortly after applying it. Then No sanding required once its dried
