not to take it too seriously but i do think the pressure to perform masculinity from women tends to come from women who put a TON of effort into performing femininity and don't get what they feel are equal returns on that effort and are trying to claw back some power

I feel this way so often but they/them just never felt right and he/him does. I can't exactly perform masculinity anyway but the feeling that you have to really does make you wanna throw up your hands and quit sometimes lmao.

I’ve followed the museum since early days and have been very happy since then to find that we’re both on the same Woke Wavelength

what's even funnier is there are still gender standards people hold nonbinary people to. you cannot escape criticisms of your gender presentation even while nonbinary

It’s so interesting to me how cis people & nonbinary/trans people can have similar sentiments about gender (ie gender is a performance I don’t like) yet still come to different conclusions about whether or not they feel comfortable with their assigned gender. I’m a cis girl and when I was little I leaned really hard into tom boy/boy stuff. You’ll sometimes hear trans afab ppl talk about something similar. But for them, experimenting with gender was freeing and felt right. And for me, acting “boyish” was more me rebelling against “girls can’t do xyz” rather than me finding happiness. It never felt right or good for me. Some ppl who personally align with their birth gender use that as proof that other ppl are faking or smthn and I could not feel more different. Being cis in a blue check mark confirmed way makes all of my convictions about gender and how important it is for ppl to find the relationship with gender that feels right to them THAT much stronger. Idk humans are so cool and I love how different we are

I love how this ties back into discussions on internalized misogyny and other forms of people in oppressed groups reinforcing the systems that is actively oppressing them (like patriarchy)

A related trend I've noticed, and I'm not trying to come down on women at all, but the type of women who say "why are you, as a man, doing X?" are the same types of women who say "i need a masculine man so i can lean into my femininity" when what they really mean is "I'm tired of supporting myself, i want a man to pay my bills." I was seeing a girl last year who would say things like this to me completely seriously, she would say "you have to be more masculine so i can lean into my femininity" and when i would ask her what that means she'd say "a woman shouldn't have to work and provide for herself." There's a reason I'm not currently with her (my pants fell down and my dickie flapped up into my face when we went to a gala)

the arbitrary standards of masculinity is one of the things that had me exploring expression outside the binary to begin with

This is actually part of why it took me so long to identify as a trans guy instead of nonbinary. There’s so much pressure on binary gender performance

deadass had this moment in like the 5th grade listening to i would die 4 you by prince. i had just started tackle football, but i couldn’t stand boys that were my age because i found them anti-intellectual and insincere about what they actually enjoyed vs. just what everyone else enjoyed. my friend group was mostly girls who read superwholock fanfiction and pokemon. i was like “yeah idk man guess i’m in neither of these camps but ican roll w that.”
