@maritimeunionaustralia: $2.50 an hour.  That’s how much the crew aboard Carnival Cruises are paid to run cruise ships up, down and around the Australian coast. This is some of the worst exploitation we have ever seen. Carnival has three Australian “home port” ships – to support this fleet, Carnival flies workers in from poor countries, picks them up from the airport and puts them to work on short-term contracts. Crew aboard these ships are often working 300 hours+ per month, being paid as little as AUD $2.50 an hour. Not only are they being given crumbs, but crews have awful, cramped living quarters with poor-quality food and water. Sometimes, the crew under the deck don’t see daylight for weeks at a time. Carnival gets away with this because Australian labour law doesn’t apply to these ships. This same loophole means there aren’t any union agreements covering these ships. We have tried to start negotiations with the company, and they won’t even sit down at the table with us.
