The insurance company didn’t refuse to pay. They were paying the e tire limits of the policy. Why are they expected to pay more than what she insured it for?

I mean, I’m not an insurance pro, but even I know what policy limits mean. If something is insured for 400,000, that’s all it’s gonna pay.

I'm afraid she's now going to throw away more money on a legal case that isn't likely going to end in her favor. I think the problem was they were under insured, which I don't think is the fault of the insurance company (but maybe it is depending on that state's laws- IDK)

First of all if the house was worth 400,000 and she got the first insurance on it and that’s what the mortgage was for doesn’t matter if the house went up in value the mortgage is still the original amount minus what she’s paid over the years because your mortgage doesn’t increase Because the appraisal value does. Secondly that’s what Max means so even if it happened the first year, they had the house they’d be in the same boat.

Who is her agent? Hopefully she had one. Most likely went direct to save money. Insurance is always something we don't need until we need it.

Sounds like this insurance policy is a cheaper alternative than what is typically required. Proper home insurance is based on the costs to rebuild. Proper mortgage companies will require proper insurance. Something is amiss here, perhaps fire isn’t covered, that ms a separate policy like flood insurance.

This is not remotely how homeowners insurance works. She would not have paid $400k “years ago” and have a $400k policy limit.

Look at your policies ACV actual cash value vs. RCV replacement cost value. You want a cheap policy go with ACV. I’m an insurance adjuster and I can’t stress how many times I hear every day I didn’t know that was on my policy. But you sign and pay for that policy every year. Take the time and read your policy EVERY YEAR, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A MORTGAGE.

I feel for her…but that’s why I was asking the insurance company “what does that mean” every two minutes when we set up homeowners. I didn’t care how dumb I sounded, I wanted them to stop and explain everything to me in layman’s terms. 😭

I’m so surprised that people honestly do not read their homeowners policies their runner’s policies their auto insurance policies! This is something you should do minimal once a year-or twice a year if that’s how often you’re paying premiums! You need to understand what insurance is what it covers and the definition of all the classes in there! If you’re old enough to own a home, rent an apartment or house and drive a car you’re old enough to be responsible to review these extremely important documents-why would any adult not do that in this day and age? I feel bad for their loss, but this falls on them.
