I will say the season 1 depression signs could just be because his best friend is missing. We’ve seen since that garage scene in the first episode that the 2 shared a closer bond than the rest.

All the examples given have legitimate reasoning. Mike was depressed because Will went missing. When he was spaced out at the hospital, he was trying to figure out the conversation he had with Holly earlier in the day about Mr. Whatsit. Also, his mother and father were nearly killed. The clock ticking in when Vecna approached from his pov is definitely something I miss and could be something!
