🎶🌸 Antonio Vivaldi – Concerto No. 1 in E major "Spring" Shunske Sato – violin and direction 🎻 Netherlands Bach Society 🎵 • The music you just heard spent nearly two hundred years all but forgotten. Vivaldi died in Vienna in 1741, far from home, deep in debt, and was buried in a plain grave. For the two centuries that followed, his name shrank to a footnote, overshadowed by Bach and Handel. It was only in the 1920s that a huge cache of his lost manuscripts resurfaced, kept in a monastery in northern Italy. The first recordings of the Four Seasons changed everything, and within a few decades he became one of the most listened-to composers on the planet. • Spring is only the first chapter of a much larger story. It opens a set of four concertos in which Vivaldi composed an entire year, season by season. After it come the stifling heat of summer, the drunken harvest of autumn, and the biting ice of winter. Each concerto paints its own weather with the same precision, from the gentlest sun to the harshest gales. When you watch this passage again knowing that, the storm stops being an isolated shock and becomes the first of many kinds of weather Vivaldi set to music. • This is not the smooth, polished sound of the Four Seasons that has played in your speakers all your life. The Netherlands Bach Society uses instruments from Vivaldi's own time, with strings made of animal gut and bows of an older design. The sound they produce is rougher and earthier, and it makes the storm feel dangerous again, the way it did three hundred years ago. There is no conductor in front of the group: the one leading is the soloist himself, Shunske Sato, marking every entrance with his body as he plays. So the storm is not held together by a baton acting from outside. It holds together on the thread of attention that ties one musician to the next. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • • • #violin #vivaldi #violinist #classicalmusic
