@noctorya: In the royal courts of the 1500s, the jester had one simple job: to entertain. He was paid to be loud, funny, and to make the King laugh. While the rest of the country might be suffering or fighting wars, the palace was supposed to be a place of joy and endless celebration. In this painting, the artist flips that idea completely. We see the jester sitting alone in a dark room, still wearing his bright red outfit. In the background, you can see the royal ball is in full swing, with people dancing and having fun. But look at the table next to him. There is a folded letter. It brings terrible news that the city of Smolensk has been lost in the war. The irony is painful to watch. The King and the nobles are dancing, completely ignoring the danger facing their country. The man who is called a "fool" is actually the only intelligent person in the building.
