It's grooming by the mother through FOG - fear obligation & guilt. Then she praises him for being such a good son for caretaking her, which provides him with validation. The partner is expected to join him in caretaking his mother, but if the partner says "no" then there will be hell to pay!

Ok well how do I tell my husband this. I love him and I’ve known him since we were 8 but he lost his dad at 11 and his mom parentified him and now she lives with us and it kills me because it feels gross how she relies on him and also hates on him. I know it’s not his fault but it’s a very painful relationship to be in.

I struggle with the mothers who do not allow their sons to handle their own business and are very controlling. I had someone tell me last week that she stops her adult son from hanging with certain people. I see it all the time with the teens I work with

Yeah I honestly can say that I don’t have that kind of relationship with any of my children. I do know at least one mum who does and I see the effect it is having on her son who is now a young man. He is totally smothered and the only child too. My eldest, I encourage him to go out in the world and have his own life. I will be happy when he starts dating and hanging out with friends more! It’s not easy to watch your kids make mistakes, but we all have to make them. This goes beyond that by the sounds of it. I have my own life and I don’t rely on my kids to fill in any void or take on any role just because I am now a single parent. It’s finding the balance and having healthy boundaries
