As a rheumatologist, one of the things I see — especially in autoimmune conditions like lupus — is pleurisy (inflammation of the lining around your lungs). Pleurisy pain often feels sharp, stabbing, or worse when you breathe in deeply, cough, or laugh. It’s caused by inflammation between the two thin layers around your lungs — called the pleura — rubbing against each other. Common causes include: 💜 Lupus (SLE) — when immune inflammation affects the pleura. 💨 Infections — viral or bacterial irritation of the lining. 💊 Certain medications — that can trigger inflammation in susceptible people. If you notice painful breathing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness that doesn’t feel muscular, don’t ignore it — check in with your doctor. Sometimes the inflammation resolves with rest and medication, but other times, it signals a flare or active autoimmune inflammation that needs treatment. Your breath should feel easy.
