The manufacturers and the dealerships are jointly responsible for the shortage. The manufacturer pays horrific labor times, sometimes half of what time it really takes to do the job. The dealership could be the savior and say that they will cover the time or overhaul the flat rate system in order to properly compensate the techs, but they refuse to do that. They use up and abuse their techs with poor pay, poor benefits, and poor and toxic work conditions. The few decent kids that do have the ability and knowledge to do it usually drop out of the business once they go flat rate and see how techs are actually treated

Man I couldn't agree more with this video. When I got into the business back in 2003 I was a lube tech and didnt know anything. About a year after I start they lose their engine guy and come to me and say . Hey your gonna be the new Engine tech good luck. The first 5 or 6 yrs of my career was a ton of trail and error and learning without real training or help. It was hell.

Correction; the dealerships have a technician shortage. Independent shops are doing fine.

The tech shortage, specifically for dealerships, is directly related to the problems with warranty pay from the manufacturers
