For centuries, Britain had a dog breed created for a job few people remember today. Their unusual body shape, short legs and long backs was intentionally bred to make them suitable for the work. By the 19th century, mechanical spit-turning devices replaced them. With their job gone, the breed was no longer needed, and people stopped breeding them. Within a few generations, the Turnspit Dog disappeared forever.
