My heart literally relaxed when a mom from Ireland sent me a hug at 3:42am 😭💛 Like…that sentence sounds insane lol. A woman I have never met, who lives across an ocean from me, was apparently awake while I was sitting in a dark nursery trying to convince my baby that 3am is actually a really wonderful time to sleep 😂 And she sent me a hug. That was it. No advice. No “have you tried putting him down drowsy but awake?” No sleep schedule. No telling me what I should be doing differently. Just a little hug from another tired mom. And idk why but it got me 🥺 Because 3am motherhood is just DIFFERENT. During the day I can usually convince myself I have my life somewhat together lol. There’s coffee. People are awake. I can text somebody. We can go outside. Target exists. 😂 But somewhere around 2:47am my brain becomes my absolute worst enemy. Why is he awake again? Am I doing something wrong? Should he be sleeping longer by now? Did he eat enough? Is he too hot? Too cold? Why did I just hear him breathe weird? Wait… did he breathe?? puts hand on baby Okay yes. Breathing. 😭😂 Then you look at the clock and realize you’ve been awake forever and somehow only 19 minutes have passed. That was me. Sitting there feeding my baby, scrolling on my phone with the brightness basically at negative 12 because apparently even the tiniest amount of light will wake everyone in a 4 mile radius 😂 And I opened the map. There were all these little yellow lights. Moms awake. At the SAME time. Some probably nursing. Some pumping. Some rocking babies. Some changing sheets after a blowout that absolutely did not need to happen at 3am 😭 Some staring at the monitor praying the baby stays asleep. Some probably hiding under the covers scrolling because they finally got 10 minutes to themselves. And some probably having a really hard night. I know it’s literally just dots on a map. But when you’re sitting alone in a dark room at 3:42 in the morning, it doesn’t feel like “just dots.” It feels like proof. Like oh. Okay. There are other people doing this right now too. I’m not the only person awake in the entire freaking world 😂 Then I saw the hugs. 13 moms had sent them. One was from Ireland. And for whatever reason THAT one broke me a little 😭 Because I started thinking about her. Was she feeding her baby too? Was she pumping? Was she exhausted? Was she having one of those nights where the baby wakes up every 45 minutes and you start doing sleep deprivation math like “okay if I fall asleep RIGHT NOW I can technically get 1 hour and 17 minutes” 😂 I’ll never know. She probably tapped the little heart and went right back to whatever she was doing. But she made some random mom thousands of miles away feel better. That’s kind of beautiful?? 🥹 Motherhood can be so weirdly lonely because you’re almost never actually alone. There is literally a tiny human touching you approximately 97% of the day 😂 But you can still feel incredibly alone. Especially at night. Everyone talks about the newborn cuddles and the sleepy little noises and the sweet middle-of-the-night feeds. And yes. Those exist. 💛 But sometimes you’re also sitting there with greasy hair, one boob out, yesterday’s leggings on, eating a granola bar you found in the diaper bag while wondering if you’re ever going to feel like a functioning person again 😂 Both can be true. And sometimes you don’t need somebody to fix that feeling. You just need another mom to quietly say: same. 💛 That’s what that little hug felt like. So to the mom in Ireland who was awake at the same ridiculous hour as me… hi 🥺 I have no idea who you are. I have no idea what your night looked like. But your tiny little internet hug made my 3:42am feel a lot less lonely. And I hope somebody did the same for you. 💛 Anyway. If you’re reading this at some ungodly hour with a baby attached to you… I’m probably not awake right this second. But another mom somewhere definitely is.
