There is no way I would ever recommend this road be traveled by anyone. It was, without a doubt, the most frightening stretch of road, if you want to call it that, that I have ever been on. Barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass and you just prayed that the road by the sheer 2000 foot drop off would hold your vehicle. It still gives me nightmares to this day when I think about it.

My grandson (12) and I inadvertently took this trail in Oct. we were scared as hell but it was too late to turn back. We made the most of it by playing words that ended with ‘ation’ and at every wash we screamed TURTLE! It was a great memory for us. In fact we turned our ‘ation’ game into a family game we still play to this day. The drive was LONG (2) hours with nothing but winding dirt road but we made it. We ended up in Payson!

This way has always been the most scariest way to get to Apache Lake. Take the back route. its safer and just as beautiful 😍

If you’re lucky enough, drive it shortly after rainfall to see waterfalls that are breathtaking, but the drive is not for the faint of heart

Is it open again. I did one of the last trips before it closed a few years back. A lot of it was still just packed dirt roads back then, I think they did a lot of work on it to make it more passable.

The first time I drove the Apache trail was at night. I had KC lights on the front of my truck, it was pretty cool going down. met up with some friends and they wanted to go to Apache lake. it was awesome coming back out once we could see everything.
