The correspondence includes requests for large sums of money, at least 500,000 dollars at a time, plus monthly expenses, to support election campaigns, party operations, and the UML. The leaked letters name former prime ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal, K P Oli, and Baburam Bhattarai, showing efforts to cultivate influence within Nepal’s communist leadership. Emails describe Dhakal coordinating with UML leaders, seeking campaign financing, and negotiating his placement on the UML proportional representation list ahead of the 2017 elections. He later became a minister in Oli’s government. Documents also reveal that Dhakal organised the Asia Pacific Summit 2018 in Kathmandu, presided over by Hak Ja Han, wife of founder Sun Myung Moon. The summit, attended by leaders including Cambodia’s Hun Sen, sparked controversy in Nepal and introduced the term Holy Wine as a label for alleged Church-linked influence. The leaks show long-term plans to educate Nepali lawmakers in Church ideology, including proposed overseas trips and shaping political direction around Cheon Il Guk, the Church’s vision of a heavenly nation centred on family values.
