# 🦴 OSTEOPOROSIS & BONE DENSITY: Protect Your Strength, Mobility & Independence Bone health becomes increasingly important as we age—especially for women after menopause, when declining estrogen can accelerate bone loss. **Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because bone loss can occur without obvious symptoms until a fracture happens.** The good news? There are practical steps you can take to protect your bones and reduce your risk. ### 🥦 1. BUILD STRONGER BONES WITH THE BASICS Your daily habits matter. • **Calcium-rich foods:** Include foods such as dairy products, calcium-fortified alternatives, leafy greens, and other calcium-containing foods. • **Vitamin D:** Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Sun exposure may contribute, but food and supplements may also be appropriate depending on your individual needs. • **Weight-bearing exercise:** Walking, stair climbing, resistance training, and other appropriate weight-bearing activities can help maintain bone and muscle strength. • **Strength + balance:** Strong muscles and better balance can also help reduce the risk of falls and fractures. ### 🔎 2. KNOW WHEN BONE-DENSITY TESTING MATTERS A **DEXA/DXA scan** is commonly used to measure bone mineral density and help identify osteoporosis or low bone density. Testing may be particularly important for people at increased fracture risk, including many postmenopausal women and older adults. Your healthcare professional can determine **when you should be screened based on your age, sex, fracture history, risk factors, medications, and overall health.** ⚠️ Access to DEXA testing can vary depending on location and healthcare resources, making awareness and early discussion with your healthcare provider important. ### ❤️ 3. WHY OSTEOPOROSIS MATTERS A fracture isn't “just a broken bone.” Hip, spine, and other major fractures can affect: • Mobility • Independence • Physical function • Quality of life • Confidence and activity levels And once a person experiences one osteoporosis-related fracture, the risk of additional fractures may increase. **Prevention and early detection can make a meaningful difference.** ### 🧪 4. UNDERSTAND YOUR BONE HEALTH RESULTS A bone-density report may include a **T-score**, which compares bone density with that of a healthy young-adult reference population. In general: **T-score −1.0 or above:** Normal bone density **T-score between −1.0 and −2.5:** Low bone density/osteopenia **T-score −2.5 or below:** Consistent with osteoporosis in the appropriate clinical context But your **T-score is only one part of the picture.** Your healthcare professional may also consider fracture history, age, medications, other medical conditions, and tools that estimate fracture risk. ### 🩸 5. BONE METABOLISM & PREVENTION Depending on your circumstances, healthcare professionals may use blood tests to investigate factors affecting bone health or to look for possible secondary causes of bone loss. For people at elevated risk, prevention may involve a combination of: ✅ Nutrition ✅ Vitamin D and calcium assessment ✅ Resistance and weight-bearing exercise ✅ Fall-prevention strategies ✅ Balance training ✅ Physical therapy when appropriate ✅ Medication when clinically indicated ✅ Regular monitoring when recommended **The goal isn't simply to get an impressive bone-density number—it’s to preserve strength, mobility and independence for as long as possible.** ### 👩🦳 WOMEN OVER 50: DON'T IGNORE YOUR BONE HEALTH If you're over 50 or postmenopausal, don't wait for a fracture to start thinking about your bones. ### 📌 SAVE THIS POST ✨ **Want to support your health after 50?** We’ve curated some of our favorite wellness supplements specifically for women over 50. 💚 From everyday wellness to healthy aging support, there are some great options worth exploring. **Check the link in our Linktree profile in BIO to discover what we recommend! 👇✨ https://linktr.ee/Mia_Monroe_Health
