$Tech Tip: How to easily smooth out the edges of your cymbal. As we all know, when it comes to drums, the little things we do with our gear can make all the difference in the world. Smoothing the edges of your cymbals can significantly extend their longevity. Let me explain! Every cymbal flexes thousands of times when it’s played. Over time, the edge can develop tiny deformations, especially if you’re a heavier hitter or play loud music regularly. Additionally, cymbals are made from bronze, and as that bronze repeatedly flexes over time, microscopic fractures can begin to form. These don’t always develop into full cracks immediately, but they can create rough or sharp areas along the edge. To check out these raised spots that are most likely burrs from impact or potential cracks, run your finger gently along the edge (carefully). In this case when you have found the burr spots around the cymbal, here are a couple of steps to properly sand those spots down: 1. Inspect the edge closely. * If it’s just a tiny raised burr, a few passes with fine sandpaper (400–1000 grit) directly on the edge can knock it down. (220 is ok when used lightly) 2. Blend the area. * After the burr is removed, lightly sand at a slight angle on both sides of the edge to smooth the transition and avoid creating a flat spot. 3. Use minimal pressure. * You’re polishing and smoothing, not grinding. * Let the sandpaper do the work. Lastly, don’t take this video as your only source of information. Do your own research and take your time when attempting something like this. When done correctly, it’s just another way to maintain your gear and extend its lifespan. What do you guys think?
