At first glance, it looks like two galaxies colliding in deep space. But what you’re actually seeing is something far smaller, tiny water droplets floating on a thin soap film. Scientists recently discovered that their motion closely mirrors the way galaxies interact. Just like galaxies, the droplets orbit one another before eventually merging. The biggest difference is that the droplets move in two dimensions, while galaxies move through three-dimensional space. By studying these tiny collisions in the lab, researchers can better understand how gravity shapes massive galaxy mergers across the universe. While the droplets merge in just a few seconds, galaxy collisions take billions of years. In fact, one second in this experiment is roughly equivalent to 460 million years in space. And here’s the crazy part: our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is expected to collide with the Andromeda Galaxy in about 4–5 billion years. Sometimes, the biggest mysteries of the universe can be recreated with nothing more than soap and water. #DidYouKnow #LearnOnTikTok #facts #Science
