I think the problem with teachings on holiness is that people don’t understand the root of what God was asking for when he asked the children of Israel to be holy. This is going to be long — sorry. God is holy, and anything outside of God that is considered holy is only such because of proximity to God. But in order to be in proximity to God’s holiness (which js good but also powerful) there were certain ways they had to approach him — purely. Ritual purity, however, was not about not sinning. It was about being clean. Now, there were sins God asked them not to commit but at the root of those things was mistreatment and injustice — God did not want them to be unjust with money, sex, etc. Money and sex are not bad. But using money and sex to manipulate and harm others was the issue. So, in the New Testament (with Jesus), through Christ’s death and our belief in Him we are made holy. We no longer had to do the ritual purity things to be in God’s presence because Jesus fulfilled that requirement, but we still have an obligation to our fellow man. Righteousness is about right relation with God AND creation. So, God still wants us not to engage in harmful treatment others or ourselves because justice matters very much to God.
