@ethic_alkurdi: ISIS (also called IS or ISIL) was an extremist group that became very powerful around 2014 in Iraq and Syria. Their goal was to create a so-called caliphate and control land. To do this, they used harm, extreme brutality, fear-based acts, and forced control over civilians. Many people suffered, lost their homes, or lost their lives. The United States got involved because ISIS was seen as a global threat. The US led an international coalition and used air strikes, training, and support for local forces to weaken ISIS. They did not fight alone on the ground most of the time, but helped others do it. One of the most important groups fighting ISIS were the Kurds, especially Kurdish forces in northern Syria and Iraq. Groups like the Kurdish fighters defended their land and cities (for example Kobane) and played a huge role in pushing ISIS back, with support from the US. Over time, ISIS lost most of its territory. By 2019, their “state” collapsed.
