@secretmatchday: One of Portugal’s largest stadiums sits in the Algarve sunshine with 30,000 empty seats and no home team to fill them. Built for Euro 2004, Estádio Algarve was meant to announce the region on the European stage. A bold, modern arena set between Faro and Loulé, it hosted two tournament matches and, for a short time, felt like a permanent addition to Portugal’s football map. Then the tournament ended. Unlike most major stadiums, it was never tied to a single club. Farense and Louletano passed through, but a ground of this size was always a mismatch. Too big for local football. Too far from Lisbon and Porto to become a regular national venue. Instead, Estádio Algarve became a stadium football borrows. Portugal have played friendlies here. European clubs arrive each winter for training camps. In 2020, it staged the Portuguese Cup Final, Benfica vs Porto, behind closed doors, a surreal showpiece for an empty era. Planes drift low overhead from nearby Faro Airport. The yellow and green roof still catches the eye. Modern, immaculate, and strangely quiet. Not abandoned. Just waiting. #faro #groundhopping #awayday #stadiums #drone

MUAW :
Algarve has too many local teams for such a small area, merge some the teams and create Algarve United and you’ll have a team that could compete in the Portuguese Liga, like Braga

Always been fascinated by this stadium. At least it's not just been left to rot and is still used.
