um what ...trainer here over 25 years, very pro prong collar. I have trained hundreds with one and never even remotely close to had one pop open....that should never be a thing if it's on correctly and you have the original herm sprenger, no generic knockoffs!

IMO not every dog needs a safety clip. Prong collar has many many different uses and in the case it breaks the dog should have reliable recall since you shouldn’t be dependent on a tool at any given time! All learned behaviors should come before any tool usage. Since these tools should not be used for any sort of behavioral modification (reactivity, aggression, low confidence ect) i don’t see the case a clip should be needed! Feel free to shine light on why you would disagree I enjoy hearing other takes or opinions on this matter!

Ugh I feel like the black coated prongs are terrible about it too, like obviously every kind of prong has the possibility of coming open on accident but it feels like they grease those black ones before they ship them out 💀

well it depends three of the dog i use prongs on i absolutely do this, but my service dog? why would I, thats just more to put on and take off. If his prong fails he can still task and behave appropriately, not to mention he never pulls hard enough for the prong to break in the first place

I don’t think every single dog needs a backup. My service dog works on a prong and I hate using the back ups because it adds an extra strap to get caught and with my wheelchair and in tight spaces - I think it is a safety risk for us personally. We have never had an issue with the prong failing and she is reliably trained. She also usually has other grab points if needed.

Mine pops off every so often. Luckily is my sdit and his recall is good. Honestly I didn’t even notice the last time it popped off cause he was working so he was in a forever heel 😂 took me a minute before I realized the lead was off entirely

I've had my dogs prong pop off in PRAGUE. the fear I felt ... to be fair we probably should be using a safety clip but we didn't adventure like we used to...most just neighborhood walks now and she's older ...but whether y'all want to use one or not don't argue that prongs popping off isn't an issue. until it happens to you in a dangerous context you have no idea.

we use 2 leashes, a shorty on the prong and a 6 foot that has 2 handles on the flat collar so when we're in open area he can roam and sniff.

your dog should know the basics including recall before using tools like a prong, or e-collar. if they dont you are the one setting the dog up for failure. does not matter the breed or size. my dog uses a prong collar, she also has reliable recall, knows more than basic commands and so much more.
