Released in 1981, the Motocompo was designed as a “trunk bike” to pair with the first-generation Honda City. Honda’s idea was simple but bold: create a fully functional motorcycle that could fold up and fit inside a car, allowing commuters to drive into crowded cities, park, and then ride the last stretch on two wheels. Powered by a 49cc air-cooled, two-stroke single, the Motocompo produced about 4.3 horsepower and topped out around 30 km/h (19 mph). What made it special wasn’t speed—it was engineering. The handlebars, seat, and footpegs all folded flat into a boxy, suitcase-like shape with a built-in carrying handle. Fully collapsed, it fit perfectly in the Honda City’s trunk, a concept Honda called “City + Motocompo.” Despite its clever design and cult appeal today, the Motocompo was a commercial flop. Honda expected to sell around 10,000 units per month but ended up producing only about 53,000 units total before discontinuing it in 1983. Buyers found it underpowered, awkward to ride, and too niche for everyday use. Ironically, those same quirks are why the Motocompo is now a collector favorite. Its retro styling, wild concept, and unmistakable 1980s charm have made it a symbol of Honda’s willingness to experiment—and proof that not all great ideas are immediately understood.
