Used to be that there was a substantial high end income tax-- and the LAST thing wealthy folk like Rockefeller wanted was to give money to the government. So, they went to philanthropy-- the money would have been "lost" to them either way, so why not lose it on their own terms?

They had to be philanthropic for tax purposes. They were sitting on massive dividends of cash. Billionaires today are only billionaires on paper - through unrealized gains on the ownership of their companies equity

Yeah I missed the time when the wealthy would do terrible things and then rabid philanthropy in order to chase a belief of moral salvation being a point scoring exercise. Now wealthy people do terrible things and nothing else.
