From an anthropological stand point, the big rock = status symbol. Now, that symbol’s meaning can fluctuate between person to person, but the overall idea remains the same. It’s a version of “peacocking,” where you show your big flashy feathers in order to garner some form of desired outcome. Where society is right now the big rock debate makes sense. It’s the idea, or symbol, of what you COULD have— not what you do. It’s the idea of having more, meaning more to your community, and having access to resources. This concept has actually existed for hundreds of years. It used to be spices, then it was gold, then it was diamonds, and so on and so forth. NONE of it actually makes any sense logistically, it’s just what humans do. We loveee to flash our feathers… whether or not those feathers inherently have true value.
