Shanxi山西,a province just west of Beijing, was once known mainly for its coal industry. But in recent years, as mining has declined, a new identity has emerged: China’s open-air museum of ancient art. Nowhere else in China preserves so many structures from almost every dynasties. Temples, opera stages, stone carvings, murals, bell towers, pagodas, guardian statues, and exquisite clay sculptures can be found almost everywhere. What I still can’t figure out is how so many of these buildings survived. Somehow they made it through wars, invasions, upheavals, political campaigns even the Cultural Revolution. Yet they are still standing today. And thankfully, more and more Chinese people are beginning to pay attention to them. Through the internet, many have begun to realize how important it is to protect traditional culture. You may have already seen Shanxi without realizing it. The creators of Black Myth: Wukong and Where Winds Meet traveled across Shanxi to study its architecture, recreating many real-world locations inside their games. By the way, Shanxi山西 is not Shaanxi陕西, even though they sound almost identical. In China’s travel world, there’s a famous saying: “Above ground, look to Shanxi. Underground, look to Shaanxi.” Most international travelers visit Shaanxi for the Terracotta Warriors and imperial tombs. Far fewer make the journey to Shanxi for its ancient art. That’s exactly why I wanted to share it today. If you ever have the chance, don’t miss it. I’ve visited Shanxi many times, and every trip brings a new surprise. I feel a feeling it will surprise you too. #china #chinatravel #shanxi #ancientart #culture
