Navy veteran here. The short answer is because of the security and defense ramifications. That said, the mentality that the government “owns” you once you join is a pretty pervasive aspect of military culture. Like, you become a number; a tool for a job instead of a person. “Embrace the suck.”

i agree, though in my personal opinion, it's unpatriotic to force people to do things for their country that could k!ll them in training. they signed up for training and I don't think that includes actual combat therefore they shouldn't be faced with things that could k!ll them. correct me if I'm wrong about the actual combat part, but that's how I see it

One you can quit it in basic to the reason it’s illegal it’s because you can’t quit if our country is in existential threat, you have a duty to man your post at that point the same way we can prosecute doctors for allowing someone to die when they could’ve helped hell certain states you can even be prosecuted for not rendering aid because your idea seems like a reasonable and good one on the surface until you’re the person in need of that duty or care soldiers are our protectors and if they fail to do their job, they’re not just inconveniencing people they’re killing them

Well you sign a contract to join the militarily so I would say thats the starting point to why you can't simply quit the military.

The reason they made it so difficult to get out is because if they didn't, we'd only have 1/4 the people we do now. If you had a job that was as shitty as the military, most rational people would be gone the first week lol.

especially since the military does not hold up its end of the contract. they tried to screw you out of everything they promised you through every fucking loophole they can find.

I don’t care if you quit the military or you don’t at the end of the day it should be an option whether you’ve done it for years or you should be allowed to quit it and you should be at least paid for those final times you worked there
