Momofuku registered the trademark for "Chili Crunch," and then sent out cease-and-desist letters to smaller producers of similar chili oils. There was a huge public outcry and Chang eventually issued an apology. Momofuku announced they would stop enforcing the trademark, acknowledging the term was too broad and culturally significant to own
