the proper translation is: "if you look at everything with compassion, everyone is pitiful. if you look at everything with karma (cause & effect) no one is pitiful" cause & effect is used interchangeably with the word karma. if you switch karma to cause and effect. the whole quote makes a lot more sense and is more insightful. It helps you explore the parallels between two seemingly unrelated concepts. cause & effect, unwise and unrestrained compassion, in the Buddhist philosophy it is labeled false compassion as it is more damaging than it is good
