This but it wasn’t a fantasy. I lived that life. I had the house with him I turned into a home except it wasn’t a shared sink full of dishes, it was another thing to add to MY to do list. My oldest child was my husband. There was no shared labor, no helping hand, the best friend I fell in love with moved me in and suddenly saw me as less than. The mechanic I met saw me as a tool. The mechanic I met and fell in love with turned into an arborist, and he never noticed while he was cutting branches of fallen trees, he was slowly sawing off pieces of me as well. When he saw me as his maid and not his partner, he was cutting not just me but US down. He would always be the first one to notice and mourn a healthy tree’s life lost, but when my wants and needs and feelings were a burden rather than a priority, he couldn’t see he was the one bringing the forest down.
