I absolutely love Kate, and I’m so glad she had this moment, and that it could be life changing for you as well. The only thing that bothers me is that there’s a pretty crappy insinuation that retail work is low level work. I worked in retail for over 20 years, and it was tough work. I accomplished a lot, was well respected, helped so many customers who genuinely appreciated me, and made a positive impact on my employees and coworkers. But it was very hard to be proud of it and myself when so many people turn their noses down at the field. If I had’ve seen this clip after a bad day, it would’ve only made me feel much worse. We don’t see retail and retail workers ever in a positive light in the media. I’ve worked with many wonderful people who weren’t bullies or inept or rude, but kind, smart, and skilled people. I know the point of this video is that Kate got to stand up to her bully, but the fact that she’s considered more “successful” and better than a retail worker, it’s not quite right, and hurtful to those of us who put so much of ourselves into our work. Even when we have people abusing us daily. I ended my career because I couldn’t take the constant berating anymore. I ended up having a nervous breakdown after my final customer came in and was tearing into me and my team (I did have other difficult things I was dealing with in my own life, yes, but this just tipped me over the edge, after dealing with people like her day after day). I was doing everything I could to help her a reverse an issue she was having, but she just wanted to bully us. Anyway, I guess it was part of Kate’s story. Just a bummer that she perpetuated stereotypes of people who work in service.
