@slowphiebland: Day 1 on an elephant carcass — and the cleanup crew has already clocked in 🐛🤓 Within hours, flies lay thousands of eggs, and by day one those eggs have hatched into maggots. But before the maggots even get going, the adult flies start the process in a pretty wild way: they throw up. Flies can’t chew solid food, so they regurgitate digestive enzymes onto the carcass, liquefying tissue so it can be sucked back up. That pre-digested soup is also what the newly hatched maggots feed on as they begin breaking down soft tissue at speed. Their wriggling mass generates heat, accelerating decomposition and releasing nutrients back into the ecosystem. It might look gross, but this is nature’s first-response recycling team — reducing disease risk, jump-starting nutrient return to the soil, and setting the stage for beetles, birds, and larger scavengers to follow.
