At 36 weeks, your baby is getting very close to full term and is continuing to prepare for life outside the womb. 1. Baby is about the size of a large cabbage — roughly 47 cm long and around 2.5–2.7 kg on average, although healthy babies can vary considerably. 2. Baby’s lungs are still maturing. They are producing more surfactant, which helps the lungs stay open after birth. 3. Baby is gaining more fat. This helps with body temperature control after delivery and gives the baby those fuller cheeks and arms. 4. Baby’s brain is developing rapidly. Brain growth continues throughout the final weeks of pregnancy and after birth. 5. Baby can hear you. Your baby can recognize familiar voices and may respond to sounds with movement. 6. Baby is practicing breathing movements. Even though the baby is not breathing air yet, they are moving amniotic fluid in and out of the lungs as part of normal development. 7. Baby can suck and swallow. These skills are important for feeding after birth, and your baby may practice them regularly. 8. Baby may be head-down by now. Most babies settle into a head-down position before delivery, but some remain breech at 36 weeks and may need assessment by a healthcare professional. 9. Baby has less room to move. You may feel fewer big kicks and more rolling, stretching and pressure because your baby is larger and the space is tighter. However, movements should not suddenly decrease significantly. 10. Baby is still developing. Although 37 weeks is considered early term, every additional week can support continued maturation, particularly of the brain and lungs. Important: At 36 weeks, contact your maternity unit promptly if you notice significantly reduced baby movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache/vision changes, or other concerning symptoms. #pregnacyweeks
