This is my theory....he went out there already angry and upset that day. He saw the two girls and they probably made a comment about a creep being behind them. He pulled out his gun to scare them and told them to get down the hill. Then, realizing if he let them go, they could describe him, he knew he was already in serious trouble. He used a knife to take their lives and didn't realize he'd left a bullet behind from when he had the gun out. That's just what I think.

Wait if the casing had the gun markings on it, that would mean it was firedโฆ. There was no gunshots. It was a full bullet and casing. He said he racked it and came out. The firing pin would leave the marking. Makes no sense
