@nelsonsoriero: • A quick demonstration of the Mammalian Diving Reflex. Here, I dunk my face in cold water for a few seconds, lowering my heart rate from the 100s, into the 60s. • Dunking your face into cold water stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which sends signals to the brain to activate the parasympathetic nervous system via the vagus nerve, thereby lowering heart rate. • Physiological responses include: • Lowered heart rate • Constriction of blood vessels in the extremities to shunt blood toward the brain and core • Conservation of oxygen •Vagal maneuvers can help treat conditions like Supra-ventricular Tachycardia (SVT), and can also help with panic attacks. #Paramedic #911 #Ambulance #VagusNerve #DivingReflex
that's exactly why they tell people who are upset to go splash some cold water on their face and calm down!

One time our young EM doc had us hold a girls legs way above her head, like basically holding her upside down, while she was blowing on a syringe. Super wild but it was one last hail Mary vagal maneuver before cardioversion. It worked thankfully.

Hey just a reminder that all of the scientific tests on this have been done on men! Sometimes it doesn’t work the same for women

It’s called the diving reflex. I am a therapist and I tell my clients with anxiety to use this. They sort of look at me a little wonky, but I promise them it works. And now I’ll keep this video for proof.

A lot of people on this thread are wondering, suggesting or thinking it helped their POTS.. I can promise you it did not. The only reason I’m writing this is because if it truly did work for you without tachycardia coming back shortly after, you need to see your doctor because you likely have a cardiac issue, not POTS. This will temporarily decrease your heart rate but the mechanism behind this does not work for the mechanism behind POTS induced tachycardia.
