Wabi Shebele is a major Ethiopian river that often ends in sand flats and marshes in the arid regions of eastern Ethiopia and Somalia, failing to reach the ocean in dry years, while the Gash River (Mereb River) dissipates in the sands of the Sudanese plains, also ending in desert rather than a sea. Wabi Shebele Rises in the Ethiopian Highlands and flows southeast through the Ogaden Plateau into Somalia. In drier seasons, it disappears into sand flats and marshes, though during heavy rains, it can join the Jubba River and reach the Indian Ocean.
