My mechanic worked on my transmission, I picked it up, drove about 1 miles and driven through a parking lot heard a big clunk noise and then the car wouldn’t move. I got out, saw something hanging down from the car and got it towed back to the mechanic. He took one look and remembered the moment he finger tightened something, got a phone call and forgot to go back and finish tightening it. Offered to pay my tow bill. He was my mechanic until he retired.

Wheels coming off on test drive and lower control arms without cotter keys aside. I’ve seen from others but never made those mistakes I have had a drivers window regulator blamed on myself. I always rolled either with power or mechanical drivers window down before exiting vehicles in my stall whether it was for emission inspection ( California from 1980 to 2016) or major service. Even pushers for engine clutch or transmissions..Gave them a new regulator gear strip it was a late eighties Dodge Caravan and about $20 parts. My bad doing weekend smog inspections at my brother in law’s tune up shop

Any time I get a "come back" I used to feel in a way offended I guess you could say. Now I'd rather tell the boss man bring it back let me double check what I did. It could be nothing or an honest mistake it's better to own up and make it right even if you lose time on it.

Agreed.. I went into a shop telling them that my hand brake was stuck and I probably needed new brakes. They called me and said my brakes were fine, and the hand brake just needed liberation, I asked them what I owed, he said nothing! Mechanic for life!!
