I left my job as an ER nurse to become a waitress. Not necessarily because I wanted to. I had built my entire identity around being a nurse. The badge. The scrubs. The belief that suffering through it meant I was strong. That the chaos was noble. That I was built for this. I didn’t know I was storing that chaos in my body. I never learned that the hypervigilance, the sleeplessness, the inability to sit still, the seizures — were my nervous system screaming what my mouth was trained never to say. And i definitely didn’t know the job I was sacrificing everything for was designed to use me up and replace me. So when the hospital fired me after I was assaulted and seized on their floor — I didn’t just lose a job. I lost the only identity I knew how to be. The apron saved me. Not because waitressing is healing — but because silence finally was. Stillness was. Learning who I was without the title was. We were fed a lie. That the badge makes you whole. That pushing through trauma is strength. That the system deserves your body, your health, your nervous system — and you should be grateful for it. I gave it everything. It gave me seizures and a termination. I healed outside of it. And I am never going back to who I was inside of it. Save this for the version of you that is still pretending to be okay. Send this to the nurse who needs to know their body was never the problem. The system was. #LeavingNursing #NursingBurnout #ERNurse #NurseLife #HealthcareWorkers nurse burnout recovery | nursing trauma and identity | stored trauma in nurses | nervous system burnout nursing | leaving nursing career | nurse fired | ER nurse career change | nursing identity crisis | nurse hypervigilance | nurse ptsd | toxic hospital culture | nurse assault at work | life after nursing | nurse starts over | nurse healing journey | healthcare worker trauma | lies nurses are told | nurse mental health | nursing career change
