If we were teaching our students critical thinking skills, we wouldn't be in this mess. Unfortunately, those states and counties that are backward have poor education, which perpetuates regressive ideas.

I started teaching when no child left behind was enacted. During my 20 years in an at risk school, I watched the curriculum slowly get dummied down so kids could pass multiple choice tests. This made it difficult to teach critical thinking skills. I always wondered if this was the intent of nclb.
