@keshaspeaks: A lot of us didn’t walk into marriage with clarity… we walked in with conditioning. And once you start separating what was divine from what was cultural, traditional, or just straight-up control… the whole picture looks different. 😳 If you're unpacking the beliefs you inherited and the decisions that shaped your relationship… the SpeakEasy newsletter is where I break down stuff just like this. Join through the link in my bio.
My husband brought the pastor over in a lst ditch effort to save the marriage. He told me God hated divorce, my response was if he can forgive my husband for putting his hands on me, he can forgive me for divorce.

Religion doesn’t teach men “how” to lead, it teaches that men ARE leaders. That’s why a lot of them think however they show up is “leadership”.

Ugh! Religion had me praying for my husband, sacrificing myself and for what? For an emotionally unavailable man! Ugh! I definitely felt this. 😳

I stayed in a very abusive marriage because of my faith until the pastor of my church pulled me into his office and explained that I was a daughter of God and he would never want one of his children to be treated the way I was. I knew it was bad when the church supported my divorce

I’m a man, but I have to say I was raised in the church, and I’m struggling. None of my questions have ever been answered. My wife has asked so many questions that I can’t answer, and the church told me I needed to lead my household and get her under control. I think I’m in the midst of deconstructing, and it is terrifying.

It wasn’t until my 30s when I realized my low self-confidence and low sense of self-worth was because of religion. Till this day, my parents still credit God for any of my accomplishments. They have never recognized my success as something I earned through hard work and dedication.

And if you didn’t get married by a certain age, there was something wrong with you and everybody was talking about it.

Yep, I agree. I was married 13 years the first time and then he passed away, now on my second marriage 20 years, yet I agree with this. Men want to control women, not see their heart and that control is not the way to hold a marriage together. I grew up in an abusive home, so I am not the "submissive" wife.

My church actively encouraged me to stay in spite of them knowing he was abusive. Churches care more about marriages than people.

Currently deconstructing. My thing has always been, you say God is a God of love so you cannot convince me he wants us stuck in a marriage where we’re abused, made to feel less than, and miserable. Why would he want that for us..nope can’t be convinced

I felt this! As a Haitian American woman who grew up with a single mother and four siblings this brought me to tears. I pushed through and can say I did pretty well for myself. I’m a teacher with a Master’s degree. Debunked Christianity for personal reasons, closed on my house 3 years ago. Doing my best to heal and find out who I am. You know what I hear EVERYTIME I encounter family: Where’s the husband and kids coming? I won’t lie and say it doesn’t sting but it also makes me inadequate a lot. Then I have to remind myself I’m breaking generational curses for my nieces and cousins. You were born a female which doesn’t mean your sole purpose in life to to become a wife and mother. Chase your dreams and ambitions whatever they are!

The biblical guilt is a chokehold I know all too well. Got pregnant living with him, him in ministry of course church was telling us to marry. Now I’m dealing with a man who ignores me, won’t communicate with me but I will leave and become a better version of me.
