MUKANYA SAYS YES: Thomas Mapfumo Accepts Sir Wicknell’s US$1 Million Performance Offer Zimbabwean music icon Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has officially accepted businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo’s invitation to headline two landmark celebrations – Jah Prayzah’s forthcoming wedding and Chivayo’s lavish housewarming ceremony at his Chivhu residence – in a record-breaking deal worth US$1 million. The agreement will see the legendary Chimurenga maestro receive US$500,000 per performance, setting what Chivayo says is the highest performance fee ever paid to a Zimbabwean musician. Chivayo described Mapfumo as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest cultural treasures, saying the payment was a fitting tribute to a man whose music inspired the liberation struggle, united generations and helped shape the nation’s identity. “Your music has educated, inspired, united and comforted generations of Zimbabweans, and your legacy will continue to live on for many years to come,” Chivayo wrote. He also revealed that Mapfumo will perform at the housewarming celebration for his new Chivhu home once construction is completed towards the end of November or in mid-December.
