I had no idea and also thought it was just for looks. I went through my tan wall tires so fast that I decided to go back to black wall and now that you mention it, my tire failures were all on the sidewalls

Tubeless tan wall tyres loose air pressure quicker (at least it feels like they do), and some bikes just look better with them

Got a sidewall rip on a brand new Conti GP 4season on it's first ride. It had red sidewalls. It's wasn't even my tyre😭

Tan wall on the gravel rig, and on the road bike which is limited to 25mm. MTB is black wall for sure.
