You would have to live here to understand it. State governments control the infrastructure of their own state. Washington has only had one goal in mind and that was expansion. Many moved here, and much has been changed to zone for high-value residential without even considering infrastructure. That's why traffic has gotten so much worse as a direct result. But now, all that expansion is seeing the result of a state that never cared for its own infrastructure. And now, our citizens are the ones suffering from it. Everyone who grew up has seen the number of homes built, the influx of people, and the traffic increase without a significant infrastructure change other than the light rail. If you can blame anyone, it's our current and past governors that just don't care until it's a problem. However, just to put it into perspective, we have 100-year flood zones that are mapped. It tells all yet we chose to develop in those areas with limited protections against it. Again, poor planning of our local building departments. Now, finally, our state government is seeing the result of their poor judgement calls over the past 20 years.

umm... it was 60° f today. all the snow melted. we have mountains, rain and no snow in mountains. where does that go..... im literally in the middle of it, got evacuated from work today. I dont care if it rains here, it's the mountains.

It was because we’ve had warmer weather due to à La Niña weather pattern. This caused rain in the mountains when it would normally be snowing this time of year. The damns we’re filling up fast and had to let out controlled releases to avoid an even more catastrophic situation. At the same time it was also an extreme atmospheric river dumping all over our region adding even more water and pressure on our levees.

what do you mean the rainfall wasn't extreme? it was five trillion gallons of water dumped in two days. that's more than the Amazon holds. that's a lot of water and that seems pretty extreme to me. also there's a second atmospheric river just about to hit now.

I've pretty much lived here my whole life and we've never seen this much flooding or devastation. it's still early. more rain and snow to come. I'm curious as to what the Turnip will do or not do about this. 🤔

I've been here for 40 years, that was way more water than we usually see We usually have light rain off and on for months. This was continuous heavy rain. They are calling it an atmospheric river.

it is extreme. towns i. the mountains are flooding. on top of huge amounts of rain all at once. family's that have never had to evacuate previously are needing to do so. so much water the levy are failing. I could go on.

It's because the extra winter moisture is usually trapped as snow on the mountain tops but it's been too warm so the snow is all melting and coming down the mountains at the same time as the rain is falling.
