@katherinechoiii: this is sorta embarrassing exposing my korean in front of hundreds and thousands of people 😭 I am sometimes so embarassed that I don’t even want to speak korean in front of my boyfriend (he’s not even korean) I don’t even know if my story is relatable, but let me know your thoughts in the comments love you guys💖 #koreanamerican #MentalHealth

My dad refused to speak Arabic at home and when my parents divorced and my mom moved us to the states I lost all connection to my language. I’ve tried over the years to learn but it’s an insanely difficult language to pick up, I’ll hold resent towards my dad over it forever.

My dad enforced talking Japanese in my household, my brother learnt it fluently and he can write and read perfectly however the price was a very broken teaching system with lots of violence. I decided very early that I didn't want that, so i didn't learn, I'm basically illiterate. But one thing was true, my dad always said the only thing he could inherit us was language, I'm very grateful for that. As an adult I can understand why he did it, even it was hard for us. You are so brave, you are enough, you are doing things great!

my mother tongue is actually arabic which is very difficult to learn, i was raised in Wisconsin and no matter how much my parents tried to get me to speak arabic i had a lot of trouble understanding how to interpret most of what was said to me, and how to express my own feelings and opinions

i’m half korean, and korean was rarely spoken at home. if it hadn’t been for my grandmother, who immigrated, i would’ve never learned a single word. even so, i feel judged for not knowing the language properly, and even when i try to speak korean, i’m judged by my toxic family environment. eventually stopped trying to learn bcos everything spoken in korean around me was chansori, yelling, and unjustified scolding lol

My parents wanted us to assimilate so we lost our mother tongue. I'm very insecure as a monolingual person who is visibly East Asian. They judge us for not speaking our mother tongue.

When I moved to Seoul, I used the Topik Grammar 150 book and went through each one, a few per day - it explains the grammar points really really well, and gives good example sentences, so you can easily copy and write your own sentences using the patterns.

I felt the same with me being Puerto Rican. My mom never spoke it at home then got mad at me when I was an adult and didn’t know it. As if she wasn’t the fluent one that was born and raised in Puerto Rico and could have taught me and my siblings growing up but refused to.

I know how this feels.. My parents are French Canadian but decided to send me to English school so now my French is horrible & whilst I live in an English area, I wish my French was better since knowing 2 languages is always better then one.
