@thesmallmighty: Turning points in careers don’t always look dramatic, they can often be small changes in behaviour that affect how we perform and how we are perceived. Careers are long so there’s plenty of time to make mistakes, recover, adjust, repeat. #career #behavior #corporatelife #performance #work
That’s some great mentoring. Many wouldn’t take the time.

This is great tips. Respecting your work and recording your wins. Could you let us know why this is important the more senior you go?

I achieved a lot yet my employer only acknowledged my mistakes (minor silly mistakes nothing technical) completely overseeing any good work I did 😑

I'm struggling with 2nd and 3rd. Especially 2nd, I mean it doesn't make sense why the hell should I respect someone because of their position. Just feels wrong. When I see others do it I can't help but feeling discusted. I'm past my ego, I want to become this person who is following the unwritten rules, but I don't wanna lose self respect.

If your value is not recognised, sometimes its easier to just go elsewhere if you have to boast and spend so much energy trying to promote yourself with every conversation. Most likely it comes with a big pay bump anyway.

The best thing that can happen to you throughout your carreer is getting a sincere mentor. I’ve been lucky to receive mentorship through different people. Even negative bosses can be good mentors. When I was 19, my first boss was my senior colleague. He taught me patience, he let me try things out and took responsibility for me, he also taught me how to become more mature and it let me to being promoted 4 years later. My second boss caused everyone on his team to land in burnouts. He taught me to be self relient, to trust yourself and to differentiate between your own worth and how you are treated, that you need someone to believe in you or you will never be appreciated. I left after 2,5 years because I realized he would never give me opportunities to develop. My third boss was hard on me too, he scolded me but it was not unfounded. I grew under his wings and it taught me to take end to end responsibility. But when his son took over the company it was too contradicting so I left after 4 years as well. My 4th boss was a mix of all my bosses. Harsh, but actually gave me opportunities and let me dive head deep into them without any help. There I found a colleague who guided me through those storms and that is the place where I reached another level. I gained more confidence than I ever had before and was met with rewards. However it was too fast paced 😁 I’m at my current job now since 2 months and I feel like all my work places prepared me with the advantage that I have today. I might only be 34, but my experiences make me a senior manager who knows how to approach storms calmly and who can now guide others through it as well

This is great advice - it’s a hard pill to swallow with so much internal pressure we put on ourselves to be “perfect” and assume everyone will understand the value and the effort we’re putting in…but if we can’t even articulate that well, how is anyone else supposed to see that?
